How to finish a successful interview

Jul 2018

It is baffling to us how many people end their perfectly good interview by saying “No I think you have covered everything” to their interviewer.  Really “everything”?

Given that an average interview last about 45 minutes is it ever possible for the interviewer to have covered everything?  What this phrase really says to an interviewer is “I have not bothered to research or take an interest in you or the company to prepare just one question regarding the organisation or those within it.”

It is one of the most common forms of negative feedback we receive from our clients (that and questionable dress sense but that is for another post) and it is so disappointing to hear because it ends the interview on a downward note.  Never underestimate the importance of that last question.  Interviewers are not being polite and returning the favour, they are really asking whether you are interested in them, the role and the company.  Asking nothing comes across as uninterested and ill-prepared and who would hire a person like that!

Here are some of our top tips for the end of interview questions:

  • What would a typical day be like if I were to get the job?
  • Can you tell me more about the team I would be working with?
  • What do you enjoy about working for the company?
  • How long have you worked for the company?
  • What is your background?
  • What are the next stages of the interview process should I be successful?
  • What attracted you to the company?
  • How has this position become available?
